When the Day-Date was first introduced in 1956, it was the first wristwatch in the world to display the date and the day of the week in full spelling.

The sunray finish provides subtle light reflections on many dials of the Oyster Perpetual collection. This is due to the skillful brushing technique that creates grooves from the center of the dial to the outside. The light is evenly diffused along each engraving, creating a characteristic glow that moves slightly with the position of the wrist.
Once the sunray finish is complete, the color is applied to the dial by physical vapor deposition or electroplating. A light coat of varnish completes the final look of the dial.
